ก isn't k. It isn't g either.
The official romanisation spells ก as “k”. Plenty of Thai courses spell it “g”. They disagree because neither is right: ก sits somewhere between the two, and English has no letter for it.
And ก is just the first letter of the alphabet. The same thing happens all the way through: consonants English doesn't tell apart, vowels it doesn't have, tones it doesn't mark.
Our lessons tell you that — and then stop needing to. Once you can read ก and hear how it actually sounds, you don't need a letter that's nearly right. You have the one that is.

Every letter, vowel and tone mark in a word is taught before that word turns up — no exceptions, across the whole curriculum. That's why the alphabet arrives in an unfamiliar order rather than the traditional one.
